Ein paar Fragen:

to restore sb to his former life Geht das?
It needs much courage to leave his old life behind him and begins a new.
Furthermore he mentions that every fireman in his career becomes the curiosity to experience books
In my opinion the reader has the most sympathize with John. Because the reader pities him what a torture he undergoes.
