Aufgabe | There are always variations within species. The variety with advantageous characters can produce more offspring which ultimately results in a higher percentage of that particular variation. As we see in figure 1, this is exactly what happened to the melanic form of the two-spot ladybird (Adalia bipunctata). Initially, this obvious variety could spread in industrial areas due to the pollution that puts a dark cover over everything and gave the melanic form a good camouflage. This variety could therefore reach 45% in the population in 1960. The graph in figure 1 reveals that the melanic form dropped to around 10% within 20 years. During the same period some of the industrial areas have been cleaned up and it is quite obvious that the decline of the melanic variation in the population is because of that. The offspring of the melanic form was not so well protected anymore and, therefore, the predators could more easily see them. We see that the individuals with advantageous characters, here the form with the red wings, will always become more common in the population over successive generations. |
